About the Putti in Portuguese Tile:
Putti, the wingless counterparts to cherubs, appear throughout Portuguese azulejos as playful symbols of earthly joy and beauty. Borrowed from Renaissance and Baroque art, these small, childlike figures embody innocence, love, and the pleasures of life. In tile panels, they dance through garden scenes, ride sea dragons, cradle garlands, or hold emblems of music and festivity. Unlike their celestial cousins, the putti belong to the human world, capturing moments of warmth and delight within the cool blue of glazed tile.
